Fasting in the month of Rajab

Question:

Is there any proposition about the specific priority of the practice of fasting in the month of Rajab?

Answer: Alhamdulillah. First: The month of Rajab is one of the forbidden months. Allah Ta'ala said about it

Jikh.th alam Masimamid

“Indeed, the number of months according to Allah is twelve months, (as) in the decree of Allah when He created the heavens and the earth, among them there are four forbidden months. That is the right religion, so do not wrong yourselves in it (the fourth month). ” (Surat at -Taubah: 36)

The forbidden months in question are the months of Rajab, Dzulqa'dah, Dzulhijjah, and Muharram.

Imam Bukhari narrated in hadith no. 4662, and Imam Muslim in hadith no. 1679, from Abu Bakrah radhiyallahu 'anhu , from the Prophet sallallaahu'alaihi wa sallam , he said:

"One year consists of 12 months, of which there are 4 forbidden months, 3 in a row, namely: Dzulqa'dah, Dzulhijjah, and Muharram, and Rajab Mudhor which is between Jumadil Tsani and Sha'ban."

These months are called haram months for 2 reasons:
1. Because it is forbidden to fight in them, unless the enemy starts the attack first.
2. Because the prohibition against violating things that are forbidden in these months is more emphasized than at other times.

Therefore, Allah the Exalted has forbidden us from doing immoral acts in these months, through His word the Exalted .

فَلا تَظْلِمُوا فِيهِنَّ ْنْفُسَكُمْ

"Do not wrong yourselves in (the fourth month)" (QS At Taubah: 36)

Even though committing immorality is unlawful and forbidden to do in the forbidden months and other months. However, the prohibition in the forbidden months is harsher.

Shaykh As-Sa'dy rahimahullah said ( Karim Ar-Rahman , p. 373):
"Do not menzhalimi yourself in it", this verse contains the possibility of pronouns here return to the month number 12. And indeed Allah Ta'ala has explained that He has created it as a reference for His servants. That they may worship Him by obeying Him. And give thanks to Allah Ta'alafor the favors they obtained with it. And He destined it for the benefit of the servants. Therefore you should be careful of menzhalimi yourselves at that time. It can also contain the possibility that the pronoun goes back to the four forbidden months. And this passage is a prohibition for them from unjust acts, especially during those months. Although the prohibition of unjust acts applies at all times. This is meant to add to the prohibition, and the acts of tyranny in it are heavier than other times .. "Finished quoting his words.

Second:
Regarding the practice of fasting in the month of Rajab, there is no authentic hadith regarding the virtues of fasting in that month, or specifying fasting in that month, or doing certain fasts in it. As some people do who devote part of the day in the month of Rajab to fasting, because they believe that fasting in the month of Rajab is superior to others. This has no origin at all in the Shari'ah.

However, there is a narration from the Prophet sallallaahu ' alaihi wa sallam that shows his sunnah fasting in the forbidden months (and the month of Rajab is one of the forbidden months). He sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam said,

"Fast in the haram months and then do not fast other sunnahs" (HR Abu Daud no. 2428, and Shaykh Al Albani weakened it in Dhaif Sunan Abi Daud ).

This hadith – if its status is authentic – indicates that it is sunnah to fast during the forbidden months. Whoever fasts in the month of Rajab according to this hadith, and he also fasts in other forbidden months, it is permissible.

Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah rahimahullaahu said in Majmu 'Fataawaa (25/290): "As for fasting in the month of Rajab by specializing it, the hadiths on this matter are entirely weak, even false. The scholars do not lean on any of them. And these hadiths are not weak hadiths narrated in the virtue of charity. But all of them are false hadiths and lies. In the Musnad and others there is a hadith from the Prophet sallallaahu'alaihi wa sallamathat he advocated fasting in the haram months, namely the months of Rajab, Dzulqa'dah, Dzulhijjah, and Muharram. This advice is for fasting throughout the four months, and not just for the month of Rajab. ” Finish quoting his words in a nutshell.

Ibn al-Qayyim rahimahullahu said:
"The whole hadith about the mention of fasting in the month of Rajab and prayer in some nights of that month, is a hadith that is false and fabricated." Finished quoting his words from Al Manaarul Muniif  hal. 96)

Al Hafizh Ibn Hajar rahimahullahu in Tabyiinul 'Ujb (p. 11) said:
“There is no narration about the priority of the month of Rajab. Nor is it about fasting in that month, nor is it any fast in it in particular. There is also no saheeh hadith that can be used as an argument about the night prayer that is specified in it. " Finished quoting his words.

Shaykh Sayyid Sabiq rahimahullahu said in Fiqhu As Sunan (1/383):
Fasting in the month of Rajab has no additional priority over the other months. Except because it is a forbidden month. And it is not in the saheeh sunnah that fasting has the advantage of specializing in the month. Indeed, what comes in such matters cannot be used to argue with him. ” Finished quoting his words.

Shaykh Ibn 'Uthaymeen was once asked about fasting on the 27th day of Rajab and establishing prayers at night, so he replied: “Fasting on the 27th day of Rajab and establishing prayers at night and specializing in such matters is heresy. And all heresy is heresy ". Finished quoting his words. Majmu ' Fataawa Ibn Uthaymeen , 20/440).
